Pascal Coste’s plates are based on the extensive documentation he made in Cairo between 1818 and 1827. The elevation and the section of this house in ‘rue Tabhaneh’ show four mashrabiyyāt with stucco and glass windows. Coste’s book is the first to illustrate stucco and glass windows in detail. The symmetrical distribution of the various motives is reproduced. However, in the elevation of the house in ‘rue Tabhaneh’, the design of the windows is rendered very schematically. One of Coste’s drawings, made in Cairo, shows the served as basis for the plate (Marseille, Bibliothèque de l’Alcazar, MS1310_f73a). The window openings are labelled “vitraux” and some are sketched with slightly more detail than in the plate. It is furthermore specified that the house in Tabhaneh street belongs to Hamed Kaÿa Pozas.
Coste only briefly comments on the windows in his text. He describes how the grille is so narrow that it is impossible to see from the street when a woman looks through it. And he states that there are some very elegant mashrabiyyāt adorned with sculptures and coloured-glass windows (Coste, 1937, p. 40).
