Iconography

Description

This pencil drawing, made by Émile Prisse d’Avennes (1807–1879), shows a stucco and glass window with the motif of stylized flowers (roses, carnations, lillies and tulips) within an arch, with a lattice ornament in the lower section. Prisse d’Avennes only painted the right half of this symmetrical window, which he coloured in red, yellow, and green. The window is encased in a wooden frame with stylized tendril ornament.

History

Research

According to the catalogue of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Archives et manuscrits, NAF 20443 (2), 28-8-5), this drawing was a preparatory work for the French archaeologist’s book L’Art arabe d’après les monuments du Kaire depuis le VIIe siècle jusqu’à la fin du XVIIIe (1877), in relation to the plates of the Maison Sidi Youçouf Adami (see IG_31, IG_32). But no plate in the book shows a similar window. However, the frieze with interlacing tendrils depicted on a separate board below the window, is reproduced in plate CXLIV **(IG_42), below another stucco and glass window.
A retouched photograph (IG_467), also preserved in the album, shows the same window. Prisse d’Avennes gives no information about the provenance of the window. The composition, with a lattice ornament in the lower section, is unusual. A scale attached to the photograph gives the dimensions of the original window: with the frame, the width of the half window would have been 41 cm and the height c. 113 cm.
