    Research

    Der dargestellte Pilgerheilige gibt sich anhand seiner Attribute (Hut, Stab, Buch, Felltasche, Fläschchen) nicht eindeutig zu erkennen. Die im Jahresbericht des Bernischen Historischen Museums vorgeschlagene Identifizierung mit dem hl. Fridolin ist jedenfalls abzulehnen. In Frage kommt weit eher der hl. Jakobus der Ältere oder allenfalls der hl. Wendelin. In der Gestaltung vergleichbar ist der Pilgerheilige auf einer wohl um die Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts in den südlichen Niederlanden entstandenen Rundscheibe, die sich in Newport, Rhode Island, befindet (Husband 1991, S. 215).

    Das Rundscheibchen dürfte aus der Zeit um 1520 stammen und niederrheinischer Herkunft (Köln?) sein (vgl. Lymant 1982, Kat.-Nr. 116).
